We’ve embarked on a 2 month western camping trip in our 26’ Aistream-affectionately named Shirley in honor of my mama. October 23rd, 2022 marks our 40th wedding anniversary, and this seemed like a good test of an old commitment. Can we survive 2 months together in our mobile tin can? How will my ebullient, carefree manner mesh with Kari’s sarcastic, irascible, and irreverent personality as we share this quality time in an exceedingly small space? We’re about to find out.
Two Against Nature is the name of a Steely Dan album and seemed appropriate for use here. You’re likely thinking it’s meant to symbolize our struggles as we engage in relentless confrontations with nature-free climbing El Capitan, barrel rolling through the Grand Canyon, etc. And in part it is. But we’ll explore another struggle with nature, our aging bodies and minds. Will I forget we’re dragging a massive trailer and sideswipe a passing semi? What about Kari’s ankles, my back, our collective inability to remember most things that happened in the last 30 minutes? Can we even find our way back home? Stay tuned.
Our travels will take us first to Park City, UT for Hank Adams wedding. I met Hank’s dad Bill when we worked together way back in 1984. His wife Dawn came along a few years hence, and we’ve remained best friends forever. Dawn actually delivered Sam, so she’s in our most precious of family photo’s and memories:) Hank and his bro Sam (Sam A) are our Sam’s (Sam B) best buddies-they were the best men in Sam & Michelle’s wedding last November. Damn that's a lot of Sams... Hank is like a 3rd son to us, Sam A of course being our 2nd, so this will be a fantastic weekend for us all.
From Park City we’re headed to California's Redwood National Park and the Oregon coast to spend a month, then we’ll turn east through the Columbia River Gorge, wind through Idaho and Montana, and end up in Bozeman for another wedding. The son (Mike) of another longtime friend and former neighbor Patty Morton is getting married on a ranch owned by his aunt & uncle. Rumor has it it’s quite a spread. After the wedding we'll do a week in the Jackson area at Grand Teton National Park, then head back on a yet to be determined route through the Dakota’s, ending up in Indy just in time for the Indy Jazz Festival. Retirement is exhausting…
