August 15

Today was a day of a few chores and of course, leisure. After our routine two cups of coffee I headed out to the bank, hardware, gas station, car wash, and laundry. Kari did some chores with Shirley and walked to the botanical gardens, she got a lot of book tape listening in today. After I got back I headed to the beach for a walk, some luxuriating, and to listen to a few podcasts. Kari joined me a while later, which led to our highlight photo of the day:

In the background is Goat Island, the largest island on the coast. It's 21 acres and is home to a national wildlife refuge that protects nesting sea birds. The birds are plentiful, and give me something to use my new binoculars with.

After the beach stint I packed up most of Shirley's gear in preparation for our move up the coast tomorrow to Sunset Bay SP. We drove to Gold Beach for dinner at Barnacle Bistro. The drive is known as one of the most picturesque on the coast, and it didn't disappoint. Our timing was perfect to catch the best sunset lighting at several beaches along the way. Dinner was good not great, Kari had crab cakes with local Dungeness crab, I sampled some local tuna in a modified tuna melt. This is a big area for canning tuna, it's plentiful in all forms.

On our way back we saw an amazing sight. An original VW microbus parked on the beach, with a couple dudes packing up after a surfing excursion. Check this out:

When we got back we watched a couple Seinfelds and called it a night.

  1. Most scenic photo - the laundromat. Only kidding. Nothing like a beach sunset.
