August 17

After breakfast we headed to the Coos Bay Farmers Market, which turned out to be a great market. We met the market master, you’ll see her below with Kari. Chatting with her reminded us of our friend Barbara Wilder, the market master at Indy’s Broad Ripple Farmers Market. Barbara is also cat sitting for Newman while we’re gone, thanks Barbara!

This is a big area for berries, today we picked up yellow & red raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and peaches. We’ll miss the annual Cranberry Festival in September:(. There were so many berries, it made me think of my longtime friend Barry Van Hoozen…and I caught Kari listening to Barry Manilow on her AirPods... We bought a Mediterranean feast for lunch-fresh hummus, dolmathes, tabouli, tzatziki, and homemade pita. Yum!

Next stop was Chuck’s seafood market. We got fresh albacore tuna, panko, and a dozen oysters so we could christen our new cast iron oyster pan. We even found “tuna for cats”, locally tinned of course. We bought half a case so Newman will be a happy cat, and Kari is also happy since it has low sodium.

I perched on the beach to read and listen to a few podcasts. I’ve developed some sort of odd hip pain (remember, this is our Two Against Nature trip) so thought I’d skip a hike. Kari did a walk down the coast on the Oregon Coast Trail where she found a botanical garden, a Japanese garden, and more unending views of the spectacular coastline.

We hunkered down in camp with our oysters, a fresh salad, a bunch o’ fruit, and a movie-King of Thieves. Another successful day…
