August 9

We were bunked in the thriving metropolis of Trinidad, CA in a private campground set among majestic redwoods. Shirley has been great so far. Over the last few years we've perfected how to travel efficiently so we've been pretty comfy. The main trick is to not overpack, have a place to store everything that you do bring, and put things away religiously. The weather has remained cool and sunny, perfect. No need for AC or Shirley's awnings.

Today's highlight was an incredible 8.6 mile hike on the Bull Creek Flats Trail: It's within Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and is one of the classic hikes in the area. http://www.redwoodhikes.com/Humboldt/BullCreek.html

It was an easy, largely flat loop, so it wasn't particularly strenuous. But it was absolutely stupefying. The scale of the trees is of course overwhelming, the pictures below don't begin to capture it. But as interesting as the trees was the overall ecosystem. The canopy in a mature redwood forest is extremely thick, and elevated a few hundred feet in the air. There is very little wildlife because of the lack of food etc. I saw one small black squirrel the entire day. No birds, bugs, deer, Sasquatch, nothing. It's also deathly quiet, the kind of quiet one usually only finds deep into the wilderness. The main understory was comprised of huge ferns and large, pillowy fields of clover. The clover was particularly cool.

It was a great day. We've done lots of great outdoor activities over the years, and this ranks pretty high on the list.

That night we dined at a simple diner in Trinidad. The food was nondescript but we actually saw a dog drive up and park next to us. Check him out!
