We spent today with an old work friend of mine, Ted Loring. He lives in Eureka, CA a short distance from where we were staying. Ted is a well known real estate industry consultant I used over the years. He's a cool dude, exceedingly smart and thoughtful. Ted was our inspiration for hiking the Tour du Mont Blanc, known as one of the world's great hikes. It circumnavigates the massif through Italy, France, and Switzerland and is probably our favorite vacation. https://www.rei.com/blog/travel/how-to-hike-the-tour-du-mont-blanc
Ted is also a historic preservation buff, and has recently renovated a home he's owned for many years (but not lived in). It's a mid-century home set next to Sequoia City Park. The house is amazing, surrounded by nature, and he's added multiple windows and decks to maximize the incredible outdoor setting. His property adjoins the park, so we walked through the gorgeous redwood forest for a visit.
The park is home to a small zoo, the highlight of which is the "Redwood Sky Walk" https://redwoodskywalk.com/. It's suspended from the redwoods 100' off the forest floor. And it's accessible to our physically challenged friends, which made me think of my papa and whether we could have gotten him to venture onto it...my bet is no! Accessibility has sure come a long way from his days in Warm Springs and the University of Illinois.
Just to make my bro Mark (a woodworker) salivate, I included a picture of one of the many massive burls we saw.
That night we had dinner with Ted at a seafood joint in Eureka, snapper caponata for me, yum!
